Summary

With 500 new animation sequences and all-new collision and shielding systems - representing the biggest innovations to the game engine in four years - FIFA 09 delivers more responsive, intelligent and realistic physical action. A new collision detection system with 360 degree coverage and hundreds of new collision animations enable players to behave according to their physical attributes. Player speed, direction and strength now determine everything from the severity of the collision to the outcome of possession. Plus, contact occurs with shoulders, arms and legs. Stronger players possess the strength to knock down smaller players or use their body or arms to win challenges. Player strength and momentum also determine outcomes in challenges through the new shielding system, with dozens of new outcomes created. Plus, players can now shield the ball by pushing off the defender to create space - at the risk of being called for a foul - just like real life. The increased control shielding the ball adds another strategic element to matches, enabling you to slow the game’s pace as needed. [Electronic Arts]

Gameplanet

A truly spectacular soccer title with exceptional player animations, ball handling and gameplay to boot. The AI will provide a significant challenge, but the implementation of one of the most advanced and complete online modes will mean that this game will truly last you a long time.

More realistic and a better atmosphere than ever – definitely the best FIFA-game up to date.

Typically polished and enjoyable, FIFA 09 on PS2 is aging gracefully. [Nov 2008, p.61]

As it stands, the game is still a lot of fun but largely unchanged from last year’s version. As such, it’s only really commended if you skipped 08 or are a diehard soccer fan (and don’t have access to current-generation platforms).

There's no question that FIFA on PS2 is starting to show its age. It looks good for a PS2 game and the new animations are excellent, but the frame rate isn't as smooth as we'd like it to be. It's also a big disappointment that online play is nowhere to be seen in FIFA 09 on PS2.

Fundamentally, FIFA on PS2 hit its peak somewhere around FIFA 06 or FIFA 07. With FIFA 09, there are a few new features designed for hardcore players, but hardly the many bells and whistles of years past.

The focus on playability clashes with the visual limitations, but for those who didn't get the previous edition, this one comes out recommended.

Not enough has changed for gamers to pick up the latest version of FIFA Soccer. It has regressed in the majority of the areas while the next-gen versions have catapulted ahead in quality. Avoid the PS2 version and move onto the 360 or PS3 version.

Doug G. gave it a9:
While FIFA on PS2 doesn't have the sheen of PS3 or X360, it shines for being the most polished, feature-filled and complete version of the game on any system. By this point, EA is maximizing the system with great textures and animations, wonderful touches of realism and (most importantly) great gameplay. FIFA 09 has a few new tweaks to the game engine, but it's mostly a fresh coat of polish on a formula that's gotten better every year. Current-gen soccer games are still catching up to the playability and fun factor of FIFA on PS2.

Mendi W. gave it a6:
Rent it, played it, but nothing there make me want to stick with my PS2 another year. Be A Pro mode is booorrrring I had high hope, reading XBox and PS3 reviews makes me want to upgrade to new system.
