Gears of War blends tactical action with survival horror and thrusts gamers into a deep and harrowing story of humankind's epic battle for survival against the Locust Horde, a nightmarish race of creatures that surface from the bowels of the planet. Lead war hero Marcus Fenix and his fire team as they face the onslaught of merciless warrior fiends. A revolutionary tactical combat system and breathtaking, high-definition visuals from the Unreal Engine 3 immerse you in a horrifying story of war and survival. A.I. teammates are indiscernable from human players. Voice recognition and real-time lip synching heighten the experience. The battlefield is a lethal place. To survive, suppress your enemy with blindfire, take cover in interactive environments, or use weapons and teammates to outwit your foes. [Microsoft]

Huge, muscular combatants move like giant men wearing heavy gear, fine details are everywhere, and splattering blood never looked so beautiful - and we mean that in an uncreepy, non-Hannibal Lecter kind of way. It just looks incredible.

It's all about the gameplay, and Gears of War delivers in that department so completely that it wouldn't matter if you were playing the game in 16 bit graphics. But you're not. And Gears of War's glorious presentation - everything from the sound effects to the art direction to the awesomely dark storyline - only enhances what lies at the heart of Gears' destroyed beauty: the gameplay.

It's short, at about 8 hours in length, and the last level and a half seems abrupt. I still feel like there’s a rail sequence missing when the squad tears away from the mansion in the APC... Would be a 10 if it wasn't for the extremely hard Beserkers and General RAAM. Other than that, a fantastic masterpiece.

dominik j gave it a9:
Actually 8.5 it is a great game for any xbox 360 owner the first act and last act are SO fun. gun action is cool but i hate shooters that require half a clip to used to kill one guy like halo series and this game. AI works like its supposed to but some environments after a while look too same and multiplayer is a joke. Great co-op though and great story. I can see why it got a lot of rewards.

Johnny L. gave it a9:
Thoroughly enjoyed the experience, both the visuals, the audio, and intense gameplay this game served up. And quite frankly, how can you not like a chainsaw bayonet! the gears of war experience is something you can't miss, and though there are some areas to be improved on, you'll notice some beneficial changes in the next game: gears 2.

nick gave it a0:
Boring very boring shooters are suppose to be about running through enemies shooting their face off with 2 bullets, not hiding behind cover during battles that are 5 times longer than in a normal shooters and using an entire clip to kill one guy on lv 1, the squad your forced to be with is crap they run out in the middle of the fight get shoot down and expect you to help them the enemy can see through walls and have 360 vision, and im not kidding you could hid behind cover behind and enmies back and the second you stick your head out he will spin around and kill you. this is just another crappy over hyped game on the 360 were the develpers focused to much on the blood and gore instead of the gameplay.

Jackie B gave it a4:
My problem with this series is that it's a basic mod for Unreal Tournament 2004. The Cogs look identical to the Human race in UT2k4 and after playing it on the PC, I can say that 'ts almost exactly the same. Aside from being third person, having a cover mechanic, and not being able to jump. I can say that Epic games has pulled a fast one and slapped a mod onto an older game and made millions. The only reason this game isn't getting a 1 is because the blood and gore in it are really good. Otherwise, it's hide, shoot, hide, shoot, watch scene, walk a little, hide, shoot, hide, shoot, hide, shoot, move a little, etc etc there are some enjoyable dialogues.. but honestly.. you guys just modded UT 2004 and called it Gears of War. Please. Have a little more creativity.

Sam gave it an8:
Solid. There are sequences where I regret giving the game anything lower than a 9.5, but they're overshadowed by a constant reliance on the cover system. The cover system is very good when used sparingly. Jumping from cover to cover to dodge enemy attacks and find new areas to get a better shot at the enemy is perfect, but waiting 10 minutes behind the same slab of concrete and blind firing is tiresome and more often than the former use. As expected, the game often suffers from repetition. Since it constantly repeats the bad bits it makes the great bits more enjoyable...but the bad bits need some serious working. I'm heavily looking forward to the sequel.

J B gave it a6:
This game has good visual display and satisfying animations and gore etc. - but i find it vastly inferior in it supposed strength - its "innovative" cover system and game play mechanics... The game is way to clunky, slow and generally unsatisfying - with the exception of the chainsaw, I will take COD4 over this any day.
