Fight together...or die alone. A new and highly virulent strain of the rabies virus emerges and spreads through the human population with frightening speed. The pandemic's victims become grotesquely disfigured, wildly violent psychopaths, attacking the uninfected on sight. One of the "lucky" few apparently immune to the sickness, you, unfortunately, are also trapped in a city crawling with thousands of the bloodthirsty Infacted. Together with a handful of fellow Survivors, you must fight your way to safety or die alone. A co-operative multiplayer action game from the makers of "Counter-Strike," Left 4 Dead is built atop the most advanced version of the Source Engine and introduces version 2 of Turtle Rock's artificial intelligence (A.I.) technology. The most innovative multiplayer videogame since pioneers "Quake" and "Doom." Thanks to a brilliant marriage of gameplay mechanics with cinematic genre, Left 4 Dead creates genuine fright while not only enabling, but forcing cooperation between four players fighting for their survival. Endlessly engaging and virtually flawless, it's destined to be one of the most successful original vidgames of 2008, and set a new standard for cooperative gameplay.

Left 4 Dead's simplicity offers purity of gameplay - the same reason that gamers keep returning to classic arcade games. Come to think of it, with a handful of levels and unpredictable events happening within them, Left 4 Dead has more in common with "Ms. Pac-Man" than just the eating. It's the same thing over and over - but when simple ingredients are perfectly prepared, what could be a mere snack becomes a feast. This one just happens to be on human flesh. [Holiday 2008, p.32]

An incredible package. It’s claustrophobic and sinister, yet utterly action packed and arcadey at the same time. When playing with friends, Left4Dead gives the best cooperative experience in gaming, hands down. Nothing compares. The game is lacking a bit in terms of content, and more weapons and locations would definitely add to the experience, but nothing can take away from the sheer enjoyment value. Left 4 Dead transcends the black and white of 'single player' or 'multiplayer' – suddenly there's a realisation that four players have amalgamated into a single, unified body during play. It's an incredibly exhilarating feeling, and other games offering co-op modes that amount to little more than running and gunning together suddenly appear a little juvenile. Left 4 Dead has indefinitely raised the bar for true co-operative play.

I really enjoyed playing Left 4 Dead, and will continue to do so for many more hours. My only complaint is the slight lack of content and different gaming modes. The AI controller guarantees a certain level of variation in gameplay, but the playable levels and types of enemies remain the same. Content wise the game would score an 8, but Left 4 Dead packs enough fun to raise that score half a point.

Between the tense campaign and the frenetic Versus mode, Left 4 Dead offers two distinct flavors of multiplayer action that are equally delicious when enjoyed with friends. Beyond its categorical success in establishing a vivid picture of the zombie apocalypse, Left 4 Dead's biggest breakthrough is the way it blurs the lines between the often compartmentalized pieces of a modern first-person shooter. Compared to a lot of the other games released this fall the content offered in Left 4 Dead is on the meager side. You can breeze through the campaign in one sitting, and the multiplayer versus mode isn't all that interesting in the long run. Left 4 Dead should be enjoyed with up to three other players in co-op, a mode where this game really shines and offers you intense non stop action where cooperation is a must. If you enjoy playing with others, this is a must have. If not there are more meaty games to invest in this fall.

Anton S gave it a3:
A big letdown. -Graphics are decent but you have to take into consideration that they were ripped from Half Life 2. This game doesn't add much..Actually most of the objects are same. -REPETITIVE! Only 6 different weapons and few enemies. This game is completely brainless. There really is no plot, no acting, no depth like in good FPS games. I was bored after two levels. :/ Avoid unless you can buy it for 15 bucks.

matt k gave it a10:
This game represents what can be done well with Xbox Live. With its intense multiplayer experience and endless replay value via AI Director. I recommend it to anyone looking for zombie co-op fun.

Sam S gave it a9:
Another outstanding online game from Valve. You join a group of four survivors in a mortal struggle against the zombie horde. One interesting twist is that no two games are ever the same. Positions of special enemies vary from game to game, making these appearances from the larger 'Tank' and lurking 'Witch' nearly always a surprise. It's a real treat to play on Xbox Live, especially with friends. It's a game that knows exactly what makes it fun, and succeeds at being so.

Awesome Zombie gave it a10:
Haha Andy A You're pathetic you just saw what? ONE video of the game and buyers should be aware of the game cause its bat-shit scary and gory I suggest it expecially with the new survival pack and that all the maps can be used in Versus and ALL of the glitches hav been fixed cept the Jesus room.... though the plane is fixed and I am 99% sure that the rock is fixed too plus the co-operative gameplay is beautiful the bots ARE really good the zombies actually know what to do whether it's a player or a bot and of course the...WITCH! and I am pretty sure that VALVe said they Were not releasing a storyline just to keep the game fun and the replay value is extremely high so no matter how many times you play the game it will NEVER be the same it is great though I still hate the garage door glitch like Alex D says but yeah you can no longer block rooms (I already tried that) and I've got to say it's mostly bug free I recommend this game to ALL zombie lovers whether its nazi zombie players or dead space it is GREAT expeciall with the SDK engine for the PC its ten times better with custom maps.

Rowan F gave it a6:
An amazing game - In theory. It has great graphics, great multiplayer, great gameplay ect, all of which make it a realy fun game to play, but it's completely flawed by one single factor: Its length. Four hours. That's how long it took me to complete it. Four freakin' hours. There are EXPANSION PACKS longer than that! Four hours! I mean, that might be ok if it was realy full and thought out, but not only are half the objects seen in game literaly ripped straight from Half Life 2, it doesn't even have a story line! What were valve doing all of those years? Sitting there picking their noses? Valve's feeble excuse for this pitiful gameplay time was the games massive replayablity, due to the 'AI director' which would change the positioning and quantity of the zombies each playthrough depending on how well players were doing. But as I played it, the zombies would either come from dark alley to my right, or a dark alley to my left, regardless of whether I was limping along with two temamates down and a single shell in my shotgun, or if i was tearing through the horde like an almighty god with full health and an almost unlimited supply of ammo. At any rate, they were the still just the same zombies in the same place to be disposed of in the same way. In short, the games excuse for not being pitifuly short - replayability - is... well a complete fabrication. This game had the potential to be great, but Valves inability to make a game of any length pretty much ruined it.

Adam B. gave it an8:
Don't play L4D expecting an in-depth FPS heavily focused on strategy; it's purely about survival in moment-to-moment situations, in a fast-paced, cooperative, arcade-type experience. The game essentially delivers for what it is, but there are some downsides. For one, Versus Mode is incredibly unbalanced; the AI Director makes no attempt to correct lopsided games, players are not matched according to skill, and it's incredibly difficult to make a comeback when the other team makes it to the safe room once. Frequently I find myself on either a terrible team or a team that's too good, resulting in an experience that isn't very fun. Another downside is the current lack of downloadable content and small number of maps, which along with the game's lack of customization makes L4D very repetitive. Also, for no good reason, the game lacks 4-player local co-op (you need two consoles or to use Live). Finally, most maps are near pitch black with a small cone of visible area from your flashlight, which adds to the suspense but irritates the eyes and wastes the space on your widescreen TV. Still, with all of these downsides, the game can be very entertaining in small groups or over Live (especially in the middle of the night).

Tomi F gave it a7:
This game was a success, their goal to make it focus on zombie apocolypse survival was bullseyed, but it can't go without its flaws. Many, many noobs online. This in-turn made many people just leave, thats no fun, then your just playing by yourself. Theres not much of a story, though you can try to remember to read the graphitie at every safe spot. If you try to take a shortcut by jumping across the turn on a cat-walk (level 2 blood harvest) and you fall, you get screwed. You lose pretty much all you're health if you fall just 10 feet. Before the game came out i heard there would be a variety of guns.. thats a lie, theres 6 different primary weapons, pistols, thats 7, then dual pistols (if that even counts) and thats it. Pipe bombs and molotov cocktails count as miscellanious, but I'm pretty sure they counted them as guns. Sometimes you had to think, like "ooh, molotov, lets chuck it at the tank and see what happens" but yea, its basically point and shoot. Teamwork is 100 percent essential and theres no way you can go ninja, or rambo and run out and kill everything. They could fixed almost all the flaws, even if they did, there would always be that 1 big flaw. For the FPS game lover, the fact that many people don't play a lot, just once in a while, and don't learn everything, all the usual spots for items, tactics and what-not (making them a 'noob') ruins it for almost the entire team when they decide to help up a computer teammate instead of shooting off the hunter of a human player.
