Summary

The first-ever Battlefield console installment drops players into the heat of battle on the high tech frontlines, entering a new modern era of combat with more firepower and new expansive environments. Armed with the latest modern weaponry, players can take control of over 30 vehicles, including tanks, helicopters and fast attack vehicles, to engage in major conflicts with up to 24 players in some of the largest online battles on the PlayStation 2 console. (Online play requires the PlayStation 2 console, a broadband connection, memory card, and network adaptor for the PlayStation 2). Voiceover communication is also supported via USB headset. Players will choose to fight for one of three military superpowers: the United States, the Chinese, or the newly formed Middle East Coalition. The game features large and detailed environments, from city streets to remote forests, in some of the globe's most notorious hot spots, allowing players to engage in multiplayer battles that could be ripped straight from tomorrow’s headlines. Battlefield: Modern Combat also includes over 70 state-of-the-art modern weapons and advanced weapon systems, including heat-seeking missiles and laser designated bombs. Additionally, with in-game success, players increase their rank and garner promotions in a persistent online world. [Electronic Arts]

The visuals are sharp, the audio is awesome (whack up the 5.1) and the action comes thick and fast in what is one of the most frenetic and exciting shooters we've seen for a while.

An excellent multiplayer FPS. The different soldier types and vehicles keep the game fresh for a long time. Too bad tanks cannot drive through small fences and over small rocks. [Jan 2006]

The combination of an intriguing campaign mode and large-scale multiplayer action for up to 24 players is hard to mess with, at least in terms of the late-model combat stuff.

The audio is fantastic, and most importantly, its gameplay is superb. HotSwapping is a distinctive new feature, and makes the single-player campaign worth playing.

A solid translation of the Battlefield series to consoles. It doesn’t quite recreate the experience perfectly but it does it well enough to make it a compelling purchase.

Whereas Battlefield’s previous entries have benefited from deep realistic multiplayer experiences that bordered on wartime simulations, Modern Combat’s strength instead lies in its solo arcade-style gameplay that, despite some questionable AI and homogenized weapon selection, still does the franchise proud.

We really like the new singleplayer mode. Though the AI is a bit too ambitious (because it'll run forward to its death at all times), the emphasis on shooting down large waves of enemies within the confines of some taxing mission of high priority is pretty exciting, especially considering how diverse our arsenals are and how varied the enemy's attacks can be.

Gamer's Hell

With a somewhat vacuous and overly dramatic plot, mixed with fractured gameplay loyalties and the sense of unease it creates, Modern Combat perhaps fails as much as it succeeds. However, the Hotswap squad function is an unusually appealing and vitally important inclusion.

I expected more from the single player than I got. Weapons upgrades and unlockables are cool, but a storyline that really doesn't go anywhere or suck you in, combined with lackluster computer AI bring the experience down. Almost like it's an afterthought.

The game has all the things that have made "Battlefield" a PC favorite. In particular, the vehicles work well, maybe even better with the controller. Flying a helicopter with two sticks feels natural and the ground vehicles, like tanks and humvees, are a snap.

You'll find your comrades oblivious to gunfire mere yards away; facing an enemy gunner, with their weapons conspicuously inert; and haplessly running into your line of fire. Getting penalized for losses incurred like this is annoying enough; having a mission terminate prematurely because of it is downright maddening.

Fun, yes, but not exhilarating in the way that the best games should be. It also lacks the painterly detail of Battlefield 2's levels, which seem so natural in the density of their trash-strewn details.

If you’re going to buy a copy of the game and can meet its intimidating PC sys. requirements (128 mb video, need an Nvidia FX 5700 or better, or the Radeon equivalent), get that. Otherwise, the X-Box version is probably your next best bet.

i play this game alot online and i think its fabulous even though somedays ill play others games this game is my favorite i love this game so much becuase of all the mixes and matches you can do you can be support with tank or engineer in chopper and so on... but this game is always fun and exciting especially with the 4 armies 27 lvls and 50 weapons and about 50 vehicles i mean cmon how much mixin and matchin can u do beside that?

Rick gave it a10:
Picked up the single player mode and put it down again in after a couple of hours. Boring! And Id give it a 7/10 only last week did I play the online game at my nephews place. Ive never really wanted to play online games much as I didnt see the attraction. Boy was I wrong. I have seen the future of gaming for the first time and its exciting and I am not looking back. Grab this game only if you are going to play it online. If you arent playing online already, grab this game, hook up broadband connection as its happening right now and its awesome. Ive been goin to bed at 5am in the morning for the last 4 days or so. You start as a team at different spawn points on your home base which has choppers, tanks, jeeps etc and there is 5 - 7 bases on a map that you have to get control of. You all have a choice between certain soldier kits: sniper, assault, engineer (rocketeer), support (health), and special ops. So the game starts and anywhere up to 24 dudes on your side all set out at the start and work as team to capture and hold these bases. A typical example on this game map called Bridge Too Far is you jump in the chopper with a couple of other dudes and say to the dude flying the damn thing (I cant fly em so I let others fly) "drop me off on top of the Chinese building" which is a big building in the centre of the map and has a wicked view over the a good area of map so you can snipe and pick people off as the opportunities present themself. Or you can get in a 120mm tank and just roll through the hills around the back of this town rolling over online players stupid enough to be caught out in the open and then come storming into the main thoroughfare blowing buildings. You hear people through your headset from different parts of the globe going "yo tank lay down some damage on base number 5 just above the second window on ya right I think there's a sniper up there....Im hooked and havent been this hooked on a multiplayer game ever. This is Awesome!

Brett S. gave it a10:
This game is great! I usually suck at any kind of FPS, but this was easy to pick up and get involved with. The visuals are great, too. Great game to play. Much better than the RainbowSix/Socom/GhostRecon game series.

Dmac H. gave it a9:
I was a big delta force black hawk down player, then i decided to try battlefield 2: modern combat and was hooked. online is extreme fun and for a console the online maps are HUGE and sprawling. the only reason it gets a nine is because the single player campaign is a little to weak, i just use it as training for online anyway.

Kevin S. gave it a7:
While this game falls way short in comparison to my much beloved PC version, it is fun to play. Console FPS's are coming around. You miss the much more strategic gameplay of the PC, but you do have the ability to use different roles and work together with the headset system. Not a bad game if you feel like sitting on the couch running around shooting things.

Lee K. gave it a10:
This is an amazing game!! i have palyed both the ps2 and xbox versions and i have too say i have no idea which one is better even though i am a ps2 fan... oh well!! The on-line game play is great. And i have never had it crash or lag dramaticly on me... yet!

Jace N. gave it a3:
Yet another PS2 game running on XBOX hardware. Electronic Arts is now the number 1 laziest developer in the universe. Apart from the horrific graphics and the stupid "bark a couple of military style scream-command at the already confused player" attitude theres this whole "Unlock" system with the weapons straight out of games we got bored with two generations ago. Q-How do you make a 10 minute game last an hour? A-Introduce 6 unlockables! Putting a sniper on a tower with a short range shotgun just because you havent unlocked even an M16 yet is nothing short of cheap game lengthening.
